Rachael Ashley — Creative Portrait Photographer in the Heart of Derby

Hello I am Rachael- a creative photographer working across brands, artist, organisations and individuals.

My practice explores sensuality, symbolism, and transformation, creating images that exist between reality and myth. I’m drawn to quiet intensity — layered identities, subtle gestures, and moments that feel both intimate and otherworldly. Each body of work is developed with a strong conceptual foundation, resulting in imagery that is both visually distinctive and emotionally resonant.

I hold an MA in Photography (Distinction) from the University of Derby, where I developed my ongoing series Double, Double. Rooted in feminist discourse, the project reimagines the witch as a figure of feminine power and resistance. Through collaborative process and the use of double exposure and monochrome abstraction, I construct images that dissolve boundaries between body, landscape, and narrative.

Working between studio and natural environments, my approach is intuitive yet highly considered — balancing atmosphere, composition, and storytelling to create work that feels both refined and instinctive.

Alongside my personal practice, I collaborate with artists, stylists, and brands on editorial and commissioned projects, bringing a distinctive visual language to each production. My work is designed to exist both within publication and as collectible fine art.

I am also involved with Snap and Chat Connect, facilitating inclusive, community-led photography experiences that encourage creativity and wellbeing.
